2022 MLB Home Run Derby results, Juan Soto beats Julio Rodríguez for crown
Despite the fact that Julio Rodriguez blasted 81 home runs and Albert Pujols experienced a special moment, Juan Soto won the championship.
On Monday night, Juan Soto, one of the best hitters in Major League Baseball, added to his already impressive résumé.
The 23-year-old Nationals player won the 2022 MLB Home Run Derby by defeating Julio Rodriguez, a rookie for the Mariners, in the championship game.
Before facing Soto in the championship match, Rodriguez held a small coming-out celebration. In the second round, he prevented Pete Alonso from making it three in a row.
After winning the competition in 2019 and 2021, Alonso was seeking to become the first player to ever win three straight Derbies.
Albert Pujols, a Cardinals veteran, stole the show earlier in the evening. In the first round, the 42-year-old defeated Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Schwarber.
Although Soto may not have caused as many heads to drop as Rodriguez did in the 2022 Derby, he ultimately raised the trophy.
The rookie Seattle batter struck out 32 times in the first round before launching 31 home runs in the semifinals. Those two incidents caused some Derby history.
The AL Rookie of the Year front-runner at the half is only 21 years old; Rodriguez. He is now the third-youngest player to have ever appeared in a Derby final.
Pujols was playing in the Derby for the fifth time in his career, and with the victory over Schwarber, he became the first player to ever make it past the first round five times.
